Devils Prep for Long Road Trip to Irwinton

October 14, 2007

Our Red Devils have been to Irwinton to play Wilkinson County once before, but this week's trip will still be a long one. Wilkinson's field has moved to the northwest side of Irwinton since our Devils previous visit in 1990.

The Warriors are working to improve on their 5-6 record, when they lost in the first round of the Class A playoffs. They return 21 lettermen, including 7 offensive starters and 4 defensive starters.

Their offensive line returns, anchored by 280-pound Marquis Briscoe who reportedly runs the 40 in 4.9 seconds. The Warriors return their leading ground gainer (Tranekious Todd) and receiver (Toni McRae).

Wilkinson got off to a rough start in 2007, tying Class AA Putnam County 12-all before losing to Wilcox County, then favored by some to win Class A. They were trailing AAAA Jones County 9-6 in a storm-shortened game called in the fourth quarter.

Since then, the blue and gold-clad Warriors have outscored their 3 Region 7-A opponents 142-21. They are well on their way to another playoff berth this season.

TRAVEL INFO:

Wilkinson County High and its football stadium are located at the intersection of Georgia 57 (Kenneth W. Birdsong Hwy) and Macon Road.

A review of maps and a conversation with some people that should know provides two primary routes to reach Wilkinson County High, which is south of Milledgeville and east of Macon, a few miles west of US 441. The north route takes you through Warrenton, Sparta, Milledgeville, and then south on 441 (recommend eating in Milledgeville). Tiake a right onto Macon Road just south of McIntyre, and the school will be on the right less than 2 miles later.

The other route, particularly attractive for fans living in or near Augusta, will be to take US 1 to Wrens, then GA 88 (Fall Line Freeway) to Sandersville. This puts you on a 4-lane divided highway from Augusta to Sandersville.

Either route is over 100 miles with an estimated drive time over 2 hours and 20 minutes.
