Defense Leads Lincoln County To Huge Victory Over Warren

October 27, 2007

Lincoln County's defense made the Red Devil faithful forget about the 32 points allowed the previous week as it shut down the powerful Warren County offense Friday night.

The Red Devils, picked my many to lose to the Screaming Devils for the first time since 1971, reaffirmed that the two-time defending Class A State Champions are not going to go easy. In the final 22 minutes of play, the Warren County offense managed just 31 yards on 17 snaps, going 0-for-4 on third down conversions and 0-for-2 on fourth down conversions.

Screaming Devil star QB Tommy Seals managed only 8 yards rushing on 9 carries thanks to 3 sacks by the Devil Defense. The guys in all red also forced two fumbles by Seals, with the home team recovering one. Warren had two big plays on offense: the 40-yard TD run and a 37-yard pass. Take away those two and the visitors managed only 86 yards on 36 plays.

The Lincoln County offense, restricted to a smaller playbook due to injuries, pounded and pounded at Warren County. A. G. Middlebrooks led the rushing attack with 138 yards on 16 carries, and Jamareon Green being the workhorse with 84 yards on 20 carries. Jafabian Green carried 12 times for 33 yards, including some key runs. Those total 25 yards on 48 carries, and helped LCHS control the clock with 9 more minutes of possession than Warren.

The game was played before the largest crowd of the year for our Devils, and a great turnout by Warren County fans.

Neither team could get a sustained drive going in the first half. Our Devils attempted a field goal but the low kick was blocked at the line.

The home crowd was momentarily stunned as Warren County quickly marched down the field with the second half kickoff, scoring on a 40-yard run with 10:02 to go in the third.

But our Devils came right back, running the ball 55 yards on 10 plays with Jafabian Green scoring from the 1 with 5:14 to go in the third.

After an exchange of possessions, Warren faced 4th-&-8 at their 35. A five-yard penalty against the Devils shortened the distance to 4th-&-3 at their 40. The Screaming Devils snapped the ball to the up-back in punt formation, but our Devils stopped him just short of first down.

Middlebrooks went around right end for 32 yards, and then scored from the 6 for what would be winning points. Vance Tarver's PAT kick gave our Devils a 14-7 lead with 9:49 left in the game.

The Devil Defense stopped Warren on its next two possessions, including on 4th down with 1:40 to go to clinch the victory.
