Twiggs County Stands Between Devils & 7-A Crown

October 29, 2007

Only the Twiggs County Cobras stand between the Lincoln County Red Devils and their 33rd region football crown since 1960.

Twiggs County missed the playoffs in 2006 after 4 straight years in the postseason. Their deepest run came in 2005, but was ended at The Bud 22-0. Coach Dexter Copeland returned 8 offensive starters, including most of his linemen. College prospects Devin Stephens (6'1" 235) and Jermaine Hill (5'9" 250) anchor the seasoned line, while Moneterrio Clay is the leader on the defensive line at 6'2" 245. Clay's brother starts at linebacker for Clemson.

QB Justin Anderson (6'1" 190) is another prospect, with Daven Bell the leading rusher after leading the team on the ground as a freshman.

The Cobras are riding a 3-game winning streak after starting 2-5. Two of those early losses were to AA powerhouses Dublin and Bleckley County. Twiggs lost to Warren County 33-14 on September 28, but handily beat Hancock Central 27-6 a week later. Since then, they have had an open date and two easy wins over Aquinas and Monticello to prepare for the Devils' visit to the Cobra Pit.

Lincoln County is 3-1 against the team from Jeffersonville. The sole loss was in 2002 in Lincolnton when a late TD lifted the Cobras 18-15. The Devils won 29-7 in their only previous visit to the Pit.

Directions:

After reaching Milledgeville, follow US 441 south (bypass or through town). When the 441 bypass and main 441 route meet, head southwest on GA 243 (Gordon Hwy). (The road to Irwinton goes south/southeast from that intersection, so it may look familiar from 2 weeks ago.)

In Gordon, turn left onto South Main Street (GA 18 Spur), then right onto Macon Road for 259 feet. Turn left onto Gray Hwy, following GA 18 (Gordon Road) south 14 miles to Jeffersonville. GA 18 becomes GA 96 as you head southwest thru Jeffersonville. About half a mile the other side of Jeffersonville, turn right onto Watson Drive. The school will be on the left less than a half mile after the turn. Park in the left most parking area. The field is to the left of the school.

Driving time from Lincolnton for the 116-mile trip is estimated by the online mapping services to be about 3 hours.
