Lincoln County's 12-7 loss to Twiggs County, coupled with Warren County's last minute 31-24 win over Wilkinson County, has shaken the 7-A standings and focused everyone on next week's Twiggs County at Wilkinson County game.
Here's where things stand after last night: Lincoln, Warren, and Twiggs are tied in region play with 5-1 records, and Wilkinson is fourth at 4-2. Those four will make the playoffs, with only the order left to be decided. The other 7-A teams are out of playoff contention.
If Lincoln defeats GMC and Warren defeats Hancock next Friday as many expect, the seedings rest with the Twiggs-Wilkinson game. If Twiggs wins, there is a 3-way tie for first. Since no one team defeated the other two, the next tie-breaker, as we understand the rules, is record against Class A teams outside your region. Warren defeated Jefferson, while Lincoln and Twiggs did not play non-7-A Class A teams. That would make Warren County the top seed, with Twiggs getting second thanks to last night's win. Our Devils would be third, with Wilkinson fourth.
In the other scenario, again if Lincoln and Warren win, and if Wilkinson defeats Twiggs, Lincoln and Warren would be tied for first. Lincoln gets the top spot since it defeated Warren. Wilkinson gets third and Twiggs fourth.
So, we are ALL Wilkinson County fans next Friday night!! Go Warriors!!!!
If our Devils finish third, they would travel -- most likely to Fairburn to play Landmark Christian, the apparent 2nd seed from 5-A.
If our Devils finish first, they would host -- most likely Eagles Landing Christian Academy (which our Devils played in round 2 last year).
Looking around Class A, Clinch County has, uhh, clinched the 1-A title. Atkinson County looks to be second, followed by Miller County. Calhoun County and Seminole County (after forfeiting two games) will fight for the fourth playoff seed.
Dooly County's perfect season came to a grinding halt in Region 2-A when Wilcox County skinned the Bobcats 42-16. Irwin County beat Turner County, eliminating Turner and keeping Hawkinsville in this Friday's region playoff.
Region 3 has ECI and Savannah Country Day meeting next Friday for the top 2 spots. Bryan County will be third, and four teams are wrangling for the fourth playoff spot.
Pacelli and Brookstone meet Friday to decide 4-A's top 2 spots. Chattahoochee County will visit Schley County to decide 3rd and 4th.
Nothing unusual in 6-A. Bowdon visits Bremen with the top spot at stake. Gordon Lee and Trion will also make the playoffs.
But then something very unusual in 8-A. Jefferson trounced long-time rival Commerce 42-7. Jefferson visits Athens Academy Friday to determine the region's top 2 spots. Commerce finishes 3rd, with Prince Avenue Christian and Social Circle meeting Friday for the fourth spot.
For other area teams, Washington-Wilkes dropped to 4-5 with a 27-20 loss to Greene County. W-W goes into the 8-AA playoff Friday as the #3 team in 8-AA subregion A, and will travel to Banks County (also 4-5).
Thomson (now 8-0-1) defeated Cross Creek 19-7, and will host Washington County (4-5) to determine 3-AAA subregion B's top spot.
