Devils Almost Pull Out Win Against Twiggs

November 02, 2007

The first play of the night in the Cobra Pit in Jeffersonville should have told the Red Devil faithful it wasn't going to be pretty. Lincoln County made a good return on the opening kickoff, only to fumble the ball at their 40.

Twiggs County then drove to the LC 16 before our Devil Defense stopped them on downs.

After swapping the pigskin back-and-forth for most of the first half, Twiggs scored on an 11-yard run with 4:04 left in the second quarter. Our Devils came right back, moving to the Cobra 19 before turning the ball over on downs. Twiggs led 6-0 at intermission.

The Devils stopped the Cobras on their first possession of the second half, taking over at midfield after a short punt. One play later A. G. Middlebrooks broke through the line on the right side and never looked back. His 48-yard run followed by Vance Tarver's PAT kick gave our Devils a 7-6 lead with 9:15 left in the third.

Turnovers and defense stops ruled most of the second half until late in the fourth when our Devils were stopped on 4th-&-1 at the Twiggs 28. Two Cobra passes moved Twiggs to midfield. An interference penalty added 15 more to the LC 34. As the Cobras passed, the Devil defender went for the interception, barely missing but clearing the path for the Cobra receiver to catch the ball and head to the endzone. Twiggs led 12-7 with 1:08 left.

Starting at their own 35, these Devils never gave up. Twiggs tried to call a timeout, but were penalized to the 50 since they had none left.

QB Austin Goldman found Wilkes Goolsby open, moving the ball to the 32. The same combination on the next play gave the Devils 1st down at the Cobra 20 with about 45 seconds left.

Twiggs jumped offsides, giving the Devils 5 more yards to the 15. Goldman to Middlebrooks was good for 6, giving 1st-&-goal at the 9 with 28 ticks left.

After an incompletion, Goldman found Middlebrooks again, this time for 5 yards to the 4 with 5.5 seconds left.

With everyone covered, Goldman attempted to run for the touchdown but was stopped at the four as time expired.
