Devils Clip War Eagles 36-15, Head West to Bremen

November 18, 2007

Lincoln County whipped Landmark Christian 36-15 in Fairburn to advance to the second round of the 2007 GHSA playoffs. Our Red Devils will now travel almost to Alabama to play Bremen next Friday.

Bremen's Blue Devils, the 6-A champs, trounced Social Circle 35-7 Friday night. The 9-2 Devils are riding a 4-game winning streak, and will be looking for revenge after past playoff visits to Lincolnton.

A. G. Middlebooks ran past the 1,000-yard mark for the season with the best night of his young career. He rushed 17 times for 220 yards and two touchdowns, and had a 50-yard TD run called back due to a flag. He caught 2 passes for 30 yards, and threw a perfect pass that should have been caught for about 30 yards. The speedy sophomore now has over 1,400 all-purpose yards for the season.

The impish Devils started the game by opening their bag of tricks and kicking onsides, recovering at the Landmark 44. A pass from Austin Goldman to Middlebrooks halved the distance to the endzone. The drive fizzled there, with Vance Tarver kicking a 38-yard field goal with 10:22 left in the first.

Tony Wells broke up a pass play to force the War Eagles to punt on their first possession. After a penalty, Middlebrooks took off down the right side for 60 yards and the first TD of the cold night. Tarver's kick put our Devils up 10-0 with 8:25 left in the first.

Early in the second, runs by Middlebrooks moved the Devils just inside the Landmark 10. Goldman his Jamareon Green for 10 yards and the score. Midway the second quarter, Middlebrooks rambled for 78 yards and a 23-7 lead that would last into the third quarter.

Midway the third, a Tarver punt pushed Landmark back to their 3. A poor punt by the War Eagles gave the Devils the ball at the Landmark 25. Six plays later, on 4th-&-goal, Green scored from the 1. Tarver's boot put the Devils up 30-7 with 2:46 left.

Lincoln County's next possession was a wild one, as our Devils scored three times. Goldman connected with Jafabian Green on a 60-yard touchdown pass, but a penalty brought the ball back to the LC 32. Three plays later Middlebrooks broke loose for 50 yards to the endzone, but another hanky pushed the Devils back. Two plays later Tony Wells caught his first pass this year and rambled for 56 yards to the Landmark 4. One play later Dechane Willis scored from the 2 with 8:15 to go. The Devils led 36-7.

Landmark would scored on an 8-yard pass with 5:44 left, but the game was already decided. Lincoln County had won at least one playoff game in 32 of the last 34 seasons.
