Playoffs Round 1 Recap: 10 Games Decided by More Than 2 TDs

First round results often provide more blowouts than later rounds because the best teams are playing (supposedly) the fourth best teams. Ten of the 16 first round games were decided by 21 or more points.

In games featuring Region 7-A teams, Warren County trailed 15-7 midway the first quarter but were led back by QB Tommy Seals with 361 total yards. The Screaming Devils broke a 29-all tie with Eagles Landing Christian to win 42-29 on their new field. [Click here for Chronicle game story] Whitefield Academy surprised Twiggs County 28-18 for its first playoff victory. The difference was passing, with Whitefield totalling 270 yards and 2 TDs to zero yards passing for Twiggs. Wilkinson County fumbled four times and lost to Fellowship Christian 3-0.

Bowdon lost to Jefferson 24-13 to end a dismal season for the western Red Devils. Bowdon's 3-8 mark is their second consecutive losing season. Commerce, a semifinalist last year, lost to Gordon Lee to finish at 6-4.

But while some Class A perennial contenders have fallen, Clinch County continues to roll with a 47-20 drubbing of Claxton.

Miller County is regaining its old form with a 48-22 whipping of Bryan County. However those Pirates have a tough game in the second round when they visit Rochelle to play 10-1 Wilcox County. The Patriots pounded Chattahoochee County 48-18.

ECI impressed a lot of folks this week with its 49-23 whipping of Seminole County. Likewise with Brookstone whipping Irwin County 31-21 and Dooly County pounding Pacelli 36-14. Athens Academy whipped Trion 42-7 and Savannah Country Day blasted Atkinson County 49-14. Schley County defeated Johnson County 25-19.

In other action featuring local teams, we knew it wouldn't be pretty when Washington-Wilkes visited Class AA powerhouse Buford. It was worse than we imagined. The Wolves scored 42 points in the FIRST QUARTER enroute to a 56-7 win over the young Tigers. [Click here for AJC game story]
