The second week of the 2008 season saw Washington-Wilkes fumble away its game with Thomson, Commerce recover from its opening round loss, and Hawkinsville get swamped by a bunch of Hurricanes.
While our Devils were visiting the Palmetto State Thursday evening, the Thomson Bulldogs were having a battle with those Tigers in Washington. The Tigers beat the T-Dawgs in the stats column, but a W-W fumble late in the game led Thomson to a 14-7 win. Click here for Chronicle game story.
Last week Commerce, which visits Lincolnton September 25, was shocked 35-14 by its long-time rival Jefferson (now playing in AA). The Tigers didn't take long recovering as they beat AAA Morgan County 33-23 this week.
Many games were played a day early this week because of stormy weather concerns, but it ended up being Hawkinsville that was savaged by Hurricanes -- the "purple" variety from Fitzgerald. It was 42-0 for the AA team, which is now in its 100th season of football. Click here for the Fitzgerald website.
Warren County is off to a tough start in 2008. Last week the Screaming Devils barely beat Glascock County, 22-16. This week Warren was shutout by Landmark Christian 20-0. But then Glascock has improved over past years, as the Panthers whipped Southwest Atlanta Christian 43-0!
Elsewhere, Class A #1 and defending state chamption ECI had to make a comeback Friday night as the Bulldogs were trailing Savannah Christian 21-20 with 2:28 left in the game. Washaun Ealey scored 3 TDs in the first half before being stopped in the second. ECI scored on a 42-yard pass with about a minute left. An interception in ECI territory preserved the win and the #1 ranking. Savannah Christian moved from AA to A this year.
