McCORMICK, SC: This year the team from Lincolnton traveled by bus instead of ferry, but the result was much the same. In 1922: 52-6. In 2008: 49-0.
McCormick's Chiefs had an impressive 40-0 win over Wagener-Salley High the week before, but any hopes of whipping the Georgia lads quickly dissipated. A 27-yard pass from Bo Reed to Stacy McClendon setup a 39-yard pass from Reed to Wilkes Goolsby for the touchdown just 96 seconds into the game. Vance Tarver's PAT kick put the Devils up 7-0, and they never looked back.
After the first of five Chief punts on the night, Goolsby was the target again for Reed, this time for 34 yards to the five. Jafabian Green scored from there with 6:29 left in the opening stanza.
Another punt, and the Devils were moving again. A sack setup a 4th-&-20 at the Chief 35. Reed connected with Alex Ellis to the 4. A. G. Middlebrooks took two plays to get into the endzone for the first of his three TDs. LC led 21-0 as the first half ended.
Middlebrooks scored from the 1 with 7:24 left in the second quarter, and on a super 28-yard dash with 3:31 left. On the latter run, he broke two tackles near the line and then just accelerated out of the reach of 4 Chiefs. Halftime had the visitors up 34-0.
McCormick fumbled away their first possession of the second half. Green scored from the 4 with 8:28 left in the third. After that, the officials let the clock run to mercifully shorten the game. With the second team gaining experience Jarvis Jones scored on a 2-yard run with three minutes left in the game. His two-point run made the final 49-0.
The Devil Defense was stellar, holding McCormick to a negative five yards rushing and 10 yards passing. The Chiefs really had only two productive plays which together totalled 27 yards, yet they ended with a net 5 yards.
