Devils Make First Visit to Hephzibah in 36 Years

September 08, 2008

Lincoln County will make its first visit to Hephzibah since 1972 when the Devils face the Rebels at 7:30 this Friday.

Our Red Devils will be only the second varsity squad to visit the new Hephzibah stadium, which cost nearly $10 million. The Rebels celebrated the stadium debut with a 38-0 shellacking of Butler, then traveled last week to defeat Josey 14-7. The new stadium is on the High School campus. Hephzibah returns college propsects QB/DB Connell Reddick, WR/DB Blake Bush (6'4"), LB/FB Demetrious Washington, and lineman Michael Thomas. Coach John Bowen was hoping experienced juniors and seniors will lead the Rebels to a winning season and playoff berth in Class AAAA. Reddick passed for 1,460 yards last season with 18 TDs and only 4 interceptions. Speedster Antoine Nabors is part of a balanced offensive attack. The defense has good speed but isn't huge on the line. Washington makes big plays as their leading tackler.

The two teams have met 12 times since their first matchup in 1956. The Devils hold a 9-3 lead in the series, but were shutout in the last meeting in 2001. The two teams were tied after four quarters in the first overtime game ever played in Lincolnton.

The High School is at 4558 Brothersville Road. Directions at Google Maps-- From Lincolnton, go to Martinez and get on Bobby Jones Expressway. Take either Windsor Spring Road or Peach Orchard Road to GA 88 (Patterson Road). Head west and turn left onto Hephzibah-McBean Road (section also known as Brothersville Road). The school will be on your left as you head south.
