The Commerce Tigers venture into Buddy Bufford Field this Friday night looking to even their 2008 record and take a big bite out of our Red Devils.
Commerce Coach Steve Savage and his staff have had two weeks to prepare for this week's game. The Tigers lost to archrival Jefferson 35-14 to open the season, but bounced back the following week with a 33-23 win over Class AAA Morgan County. September 12 Franklin County handed Commerce a rare home loss 27-0.
The Tigers return several key players, including linemen Chris Bowen and Austin Hanley, cornerbacks Deon Osborne and Jessie Savage, and junior free safety Casey Drinkard. Graduation took away leading scorer/rusher/pass Reuben Haynes, leaving a huge hole to fill. The Tigers return 7 starters on offense and all 11 defensive starters. Commerce could be the favorite in Region 8-A if their QB develops.
Lincoln County fans are very familiar with the Tigers. The series has been rather streaky, with our Devils winning the first 5, following by 4 Tiger wins in a 3-year period, and 5 more wins by our Devils. Their last meeting saw LC win 21-3 in the Georgia Dome semifinals in 2006.
Commerce is celebrating its 100th year of organized football.
