Campbell Nearing Another Milestone

November 09, 2008

Red Devil Head Coach Larry Campbell has passed many milestones in his 37-year career as the Lincoln County head coach. The win against Social Circle will sets up another milestone this coming Friday in Lincolnton.

The second-round playoff game will be the 500th game as head coach of Coach's career. Our information indicates only 10 other prep football coaches have reached that plateau.

John McKissick of Summerville High (near Charleston SC) increases the all-time record every time his team takes the field. He has coached the Green Wave in 710 games, dating back to 1952. His 565 wins leads the nation all-time.

Thomson's Luther Welsh is just behind Campbell with 496 games coached. Coach Welsh's career also started in the 1950's.

Coach Campbell is third nationally all-time in wins with a record of 424-72-3. He is the leader among small public school coaches.

For the 499 games coached so far, his teams have scored nearly 10,000 more points than their opposition. That averages to nearly three touchdowns per game played. The ELCA playoff game will be the 130th for Campbell, whose teams have won 106 (82%). This includes at least one playoff game won in 33 of the past 35 seasons. Opponents have been shutout 168 times, while our Devils have been blanked only 15 times.
