Outcomes from the final week of the regular season have setup a possible second round showdown between defending champ ECI and Clinch County.
Miller County held on late to edge Clinch County in a mild upset for the 1-A title. Miller County will now host Dooly County while Twiggs County sends its Cobras into the swamp to face an angry group of Panthers at Homerville. The Clinch/Twiggs winner will probably have to travel to play ECI in the second round.
Bremen steamrolled Bowdon 31-7 for the 6-A crown. Bremen will host Landmark Christian and the western Red Devils will host Holy Innocents. Darlington travels to play Eagles Landing Christian Academy with the winner advancing to play the winner of Lincoln County and Social Circle. Gordon Lee visits Whitefield Academy.
Region 7-A finished as expected, with wins by Wilkinson County (58-6 over Hancock) and Washington-Wilkes (41-6 over Aquinas). W-W will travel just up 78 to play Athens Academy, while Commerce visits Irwinton to face Wilkinson. Warren County goes to Norcross to face 8-A champ Wesleyan.
Hawkinsville failed to make the playoffs for the second straight year.
For other local teams of interest, Thomson will finally have to play some Red Devils in a real game! The Bulldogs will travel to Jackson to play those Devils on Red Devil Hill in the first round of the AAA playoffs. Thomson finished the regular season with a 5-5 mark, their worst season since Coach Luther Welsh returned a decade ago.
Although not headed to the playoffs because of their non-region schedule, the Glascock County Panthers ended their best season ever at 8-2 with a 40-13 trouncing of Towns County up at Hiawassee. Their previous best season had 3 wins.
