LINCOLNTON - Another rainy night in Georgia, another Lincoln County win! Our Devils whipped Social Circle's Redskins 32-0 on a foggy, misty night at Buddy Bufford Field.
The playoff win, the 113th for our Devils, ties legendary Valdosta for the most playoff wins in GHSA history. The Devils have a better record at 113-25-0, compared to the Wildcats 113-26-1. Valdosta failed to make the playoffs this season, ending its year at 5-5.
Next Friday our Devils will host Eagles Landing Christian Academy in the second round of the Class A playoffs. The winner of that game will face the winner of Wilcox County vs. Schley County. If it happens to be Wilcox vs Lincoln, the coin toss will decide the location.
Our Red Devils took the opening kickoff and quickly moved down the field. A. G. Middlebrooks scampered for 34 yards on the first play from scrimmage, with Bo Reed connecting with Stacy McLendon for 18 to the Redskin 23. A 16-yard run by Tavious McGahee gave the Devils 1st-and-goal at the 5. One play later Josh Sims scored from the 2 with 8:04 left in the opening quarter for all the points our Devils would need.
After swapping the wet pigskin on turnovers, LC started from its 38. Reed hit Wilkes Goolsby for 12 yards before Middlebrooks got loose for 42 yards and a touchdown. LC led 14-0 with 1:22 left in the first.
Lincoln failed to get a touchdown on its next possession, but Vance Tarver booted a 22-yard field goal with 8:07 left in the half. Three plays later Jafabian Green snagged a Redskin pass and returned to paydirt for the third Devil TD of the half. Tarver kicked a 31-yard field goal with just under a minute left to give our Devils a 26-0 halftime lead.
Steven Morris scored on a 32-yard run with 20 seconds left in the third quarter to invoke the mercy rule for the fourth quarter. Social Circle moved the ball against the Devil substitutes but failed to score as the game ended.
