Devils Fall To Wolves in Cold Semi

December 07, 2008

Lincoln County's Red Devils saw the hopes for their 15th State Title end on a cold night in Norcross as the Wesleyan Wolves clawed their way to a 20-12 win.

Our Devils finish the 2008 season at 12-2, making this year another great year of Red Devil football. Wesleyan will face defending champ ECI in the Georgia Dome next Saturday at 2 (GPB). ECI edged Wilkinson County 15-7 in the other semifinal matchup.

After exchanging punts, Lincoln County took the lead with 6:44 left in the first quarter on A. G. Middlebrooks 75-yard run down the left sideline. The PAT kick failed, leaving the Devils up 6-0.

Wesleyan answered with a 16-play drive that lasted over 8 minutes. Three times the Wolves converted on third downs, including the final 6-yard pass for the touchdown with 4:20 left in the half.

The Devils moved into scoring position on their next possession, but missed on a 42-yard field goal attempt with 39 seconds left in the half.

Wesleyan drove on the opening possession of the second half, scoring on an 18-yard pass with 7:11 left in the third.

Big Red came right back, with Bo Reed having one of his best games in the air. On 4th-&-2, Jafabian Green broke loose for 22 yards and a TD with 2:55 left. The Devils tried for 2 to take the lead, with Green apparently scoring, but the officials said the ball was not across the line as his knee touched. That left the score 13-12.

After an exchange of punts, a long pass put Wesleyan in Devil territory. The Devil Defense had slowed the drive and forced a 4th-&-6 at the Devil 20. The Wolves connected on a pass for a touchdown with 7:38 left in the game. THe PAT kick gave Wesleyan an 8-point lead.

The Devils went back to the air and quickly moved into scoring position. A 7-yard pass would have made a first down at the Wesleyan 30, but the ball came loose with the Wolves recovering with 5 minutes left. A final Devil drive ended with an interception.

We wish the Wolves good luck against the ECI Bulldogs next Saturday in the Dome.
