New Goalposts Ready for Thomson Scrimmage

August 20, 2009

The new goalposts on Buddy Bufford Field are set and ready for their first real action this Friday night when the Thomson Bulldogs make their appearance for a pre-season scrimmage.

The two teams were frequent opponents in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, but haven't played a varsity football game since October 26, 1951. Maybe they remember the first meeting, some 28 years earlier to the day in 1923, then Lincolnton whipped Thomson 58-0 in Lincolnton. That game remains one of the Bulldogs worst defeats ever.

You can find out much more about Thomson's proud gridiron history at www.thomsonfootball.com.

Reportedly Thomson has changed to the spread offense for 2009, replacing the running offense that Coach Luther Welsh has always favored. The Bulldogs best player is running back Dontavis Brown, with Thomson returning 5 on offense and 3 on defense. For a more detailed preview, check out this edition of the GHSFDaily newsletter.
