Class A: Reality Hits ECI, Hawkinsville Hard

September 07, 2009

Many thought ECI would get a rude awakening this season after losing their two star players to graduation. It happened last Friday night.

In a Region 3-A matchup, Savannah Christian walloped ECI's Bulldogs 34-0. The Raiders had been ranked below ECI in some polls, but that has obviously now changed as Savannah Christian becomes the favorite for the 3-A crown.

Hawkinsville had to know it had a tough chore when Class AA Fitzgerald blew into town. Those Red Devils did something our Red Devils have never done -- allowed 62 points. It was never close, and from some reports the final tally could have been much worse. Fitzgerald took a knee on the final PAT attempt.

Clinch County lost to a Class A team in the regular season. That doesn't happen very often, and especially down in the swamp. The Panthers fell to 2-A's Irwin County 14-7 in Homerville to start at 0-2. But don't count those Panthers out.

Top-ranked Wesleyan continued to roll with an impressive 35-0 win over Darlington. #2 Wilcox County kept pace with a big 34-13 win over Class AAA Perry. #4 Wilkinson County whipped 1-A Bacon County 40-2.

ECI has been #5 with Savannah Christian #7. Sixth-ranked Brookstone lost to Chattahoochee County 42-20 in a Region 4-A game. #8 Miller County lost to AA Early County 34-6. #9 Johnson County went into Savannah and beat Calvary Day 27-7. #10 Bowdon whipped AAA Haralson County 35-15.

The GHSFDaily/AJC folks adjusted their Class A top 10 after the above results:
#1 Wesleyan
#2 Wilcox County
#3 Lincoln County
#4 Wilkinson County
#5 Savannah Christian
#6 Johnson County
#7 Bowdon
#8 Chattahoochee County
#9 Holy Innocents
#10 Treutlen

In other games of interest, Thomson grabbed an early lead and defeated Washington-Wilkes 28-7. Abbeville, who will come visiting on September 11, whipped Hart County 40-13. Thomson plays at Hart County this Friday, so we might have a better idea of Abbeville's strength then.

Hephzibah, our Devils' opponent this week, secured its second shutout of the season with a 48-0 blowout of Josey. The Rebels have outscored their first two opponents 79-0. Commerce evened their record at 1-1 with a 34-14 win over AAA Morgan County.
