Rebels Try to Shutdown Devils

September 10, 2009

The Class AAAA Hephzibah Rebels will visit Buddy Bufford Field Friday night with one thing in mind - trying to keep their string of shutouts alive. Kickoff is set for 7:30.

The team from south Richmond County beat fellow 3-AAAA opponents Butler (31-0) and Josey (48-0) to start the season. The Rebels will be looking for some revenge after our Devils handed them their first loss at their new stadium last year, 23-0.

Hephzibah is coming off a 7-4 record where they lost by a point in the first round. The Rebels run multiple pro sets on offense and a 50 defense, returning 5 starters on either side of the ball.

Their best player is regarded to be wide receiver Gary Robinson, a 5-11 wideout with 4.5 speed that has a scholarship offer from Western Carolina. New sophomore QB Terry Robinson will be the offensive leader.

On defense, linebacker Bobby Liggins returns to add to his school record tackle total. Cornerback Joe Whigham is a college prospect with 4.5 speed, and also plays running back.

The Georgia Class A game of the week will be in Irwinton when Wilkinson County hosts Wilcox County. Both speedy teams are in the top 4 in most polls. Another top 10 matchup is a battle of private schools, with defending champ Wesleyan traveling to play Holy Innocents. Wesleyan has won 14 straight games since HI edged them early last season.

Washington-Wilkes hosts Social Circle, and Commerce travels to Franklin County.

Abbeville, which will visit Lincolnton next week, travels to Woodruff this week in a battle of undefeated AA schools. The two schools split their 2 games last season, with the Panthers winning in the regular season by 2 before losing by 17 in the third playoff round.
