Devils Shutout By Abbeville

September 19, 2009

BUFFY BUFFORD FIELD, LINCOLNTON -- The rains held off Friday night, but the Abbeville Panthers did not as the Palmetto State team scored 3 times in a span of 8 game minutes to win 21-0.

Abbeville star QB Jermaine Thackson, destined to play for a major college, scored on a 9-yard run with 5:15 left in the first half. This capped a 10-play, 95-yard drive after a Garrett Mohr punt went out of bounds at the 5.

As the final seconds of the first half ticked off, our Devils fumbled on fourth down near the Abbeville 20. The Panthers scooped the fumble and were off to the races, scoring as time expired to take a 14-0 halftime lead and grabbing all the momentum.

The Panthers then took the second half kickoff and drove 75 yards on 6 plays. Thackson scored on a 4-yard run with 8:49 left in the third.

Penalties and lack of third down conversion success continued to haunt the Devils as it had the first three games of the season.

This was the first shutout of our Devils since a 3-0 loss to Washington-Wilkes in the 2006 season, and the largest shutout loss since a 22-0 loss to those same Tigers in 2002. This was the largest point loss since the Devils fell to Greene County 38-13 to start the 2005 season. This is the largest home loss since the 22-0 W-W shutout.

For those interested in history, this was the first shutout of our Red Devils by a South Carolina school since a 19-0 loss at McCormick in 1945. This is the largest shutout to a Carolina school since a 31-0 loss at North Augusta in 1940.

This is only the third time in Red Devil history that our Devils have lost 21-0. The last time was in Sanford Stadium in 1961, to Coosa in the Class C state title game. The other time was 4 years earlier to Greensboro in Lincolnton.

Lincoln County travels to Commerce next Friday. Kickoff, as is the rule in Tiger Stadium, is set for 8:00.
