Speedy, Tough Foe Awaits Devils in Irwinton

October 28, 2009

Lincoln County barely won (35-32) on its last visit to Wilkinson County, and this week's trip promises to be even tougher.

The home-standing Warriors have been rated in the top 6 most of the season, and have stumbled only once enroute to their 7-1 record. They opened the season with a 16-6 win over Twiggs County, which has since gone unbeaten and has clinched the Region 2-A title. They also defeated second-ranked Wilcox County 25-21. That solitary loss was to Savannah Country Day, 29-22, the week after the Wilcox game, so the Warriors might have still be thinking about their upset win.

The Warriors lost to ECI 15-7 in the Class A semifinals last season, after falling 20-0 to our Devils in what was essentially the region title game. They have won 16 of their last 19, and returned 9 starters on defense and seven on offense. Linebacker Quayshon Simmons is considered their best player, and reportedly the best linebacker in Region 7-A. Others to watch include running back Bobby Cole, linebacker Patrick Reynolds, defensive back Bernadies Hughes, defensive end Alvin Dupree, and defensive tackles Jovon James and Deangelo Lewis.

Prior to the start of the season, WC head coach James Hagins said his 12th team could be hist best yet, or at least the best defense. He said Lincoln County will "be the favorite, but we believe we can match up with them man for man this year." (Info from GHSFDaily)

GHSF Daily has named this game one of their 10 Best for the week, along with Northside at Warner Robins. The newsletter, in Thursday's edition, noted that Wilkinson's Harris threw for 202 yards and threw and ran for touchdowns in their 19-7 victory over Washington-Wilkes last week. A win by our Red Devils would clinch Lincoln County's seventh consecutive Region 7-A championship. A win by Wilkinson would provide the Warriors their first football region title since 2000.
