Devils to Host Tough ELCA in Second Round

November 13, 2009

Eagles Landing Christian Academy, the #2 seed from Region 5, scored late to defeat Athens Academy 23-18 and earn the right to travel to Lincolnton next Friday in the second round of the Class A playoffs. ELCA has the most potent offense in Class A, average over 40 points per game and is riding a 9-game winning streak. The game will be a replay of last year's second round game when our Devils won 7-0.

The winner of next week's LC vs ELCA game will play the winner of Savannah Christian vs. Miller County. Both schools withstood late rallies Friday night in the first round. Savannah Christian defeated Irwin County 14-10, and Miller County edged Brookstone 33-27.

Warren County had a chance to score in the closing minutes but came up short of upsetting 6-A champ Darlington. The Tigers won 16-14 and will now play Commerce, a 29-19 winner over Landmark Christian. The Darlington-Commerce winner will play the winner of Twiggs County and Chattahoochee County. Twiggs whipped Savannah Country Day 43-14, and Chattahoochee outscored Seminole County 34-27.

In the other half of the bracket, there were beat-downs and come-from-behind nail-biters. Hawkinsville went into Twin City and gave ECI all they wanted and more before falling behind late and losing 22-15. ECI will travel to Homerville in the second round to face always-tough Clinch County, a 34-7 winner over Marion County. Bremen upset Wilkinson County 17-14 and will play at Holy Innocents' next week. HI had little trouble with Social Circle, 34-7.

The stadium lights went out for a while in Greenville, but the Patriots had little trouble with Pelham, 25-0. Wilcox County had all kinds of trouble with Treutlen, coming from behind to win 23-20. That makes it an all Patriot battle in Greenville next Friday when Wilcox County comes swarming.

Wesleyan had no trouble with Whitefield Academy, 45-13. Bowdon plans a different story next week when the Western Red Devils head east to Norcross to play the Wolves. Bowdon and Washington-Wilkes went toe-to-toe in a scoring fest Friday night, with the Red Devils winning 49-35. (W-W just has problems with Red Devils, don't they?!!)
