The GHSA has posted the 2010 football schedules for its competing teams. There's some interesting matchups ahead for Region 7-A schools.
The most intriguing non-region matchup has to be Twiggs County traveling to Daytona Beach to play Glades Day School in the Gridiron Challenge. Kickoff is at 3pm on Saturday, August 28. That's a 6 hour ride for the Cobras. Glades Day School is located in Belle Glade in western Palm Beach County, or about 500 miles southeast of Jeffersonville. [more info]
Two weeks later Twiggs travels to Norcross to play Wesleyan, with a home game against Butler sandwiched between the two road trips. Twiggs also opens its season a week earlier than most schools with an August 20 game at Northeast Macon. What a way to welcome a new head coach for the Cobras!
Washington-Wilkes will host Commerce September 17 in a Tiger-fight. W-W starts with its traditional game with Thomson in the Brickyard August 27 before Class A playoff contender Holy Innocents' comes visiting September 3. Oconee County visits Tigertown in W-W's other non-region contest.
Warren County has an assortment of opponents in its first four games. After starting with Glascock County, the Screaming Devils travel to Harlem. Next up will be George Walton Academy, a new arrival in Region 8-A. GWA was a playoff contender in the independent school league (GISA), but speculation varies as to how competitive the private school will be in GHSA football. Then Warren County will do something they have not done in at least 60 years - travel through Lincolnton and play at McCormick.
Wilkinson County, expected to challenge for the 7-A crown along with W-W, Warren County, Twiggs County, and our Red Devils, will host Johnson County to open the season. Then 3 road games have the Warriors going east, north, and south: Southwest Macon, Whitefield Academy, and Dougherty in Albany.
