Class A Playoff Picture Coming Into Focus

October 31, 2010

The Class A playoff brackets are starting to get filled in, with several key games remaining this coming Friday night.

The Region 7-A title will be decided in Lincolnton when Wilkinson County visits our Red Devils. The winner gets the crown and #1 seed, and the loser gets the #2 seed. Assuming Washington-Wilkes defeats Twiggs County, the Warren County vs. Aquinas game will decide the third and fourth seeds. If Aquinas wins, the Irish will be third and Warren County fourth. If the Screaming Devils win, Warren County will be third and Washington-Wilkes fourth.

Region 7 will match-up against Region 5 in first round playoff games November 12. Region 5 is a divided region that uses the final week to decide its seedings. The top seeds from each subregion, Wesleyan and ELCA, both undefeated, will meet to decide the top two seeds. The second-place team from each subregion will host the third-play team to decide seeds three and four. Pace Academy, Holy Innocents, Our Lady of Mercy, and Landmark Christian will pair up and determine which teams visit Lincolnton and Irwinton next week.

Region 1, way down in southwest Georgia, has its seedings determined. Mitchell County is #1, Seminole County is #2, Miller County is #3, and Terrell County is #4.

Region 2, regarded by many as the toughest region in Class A, will have its top 3 seeds decided by the swamp showdown in Homerville when Charlton County visits undefeated Clinch County. If the Panthers win, they are first, Wilcox County is second, and Charlton third. If the Indians win, Wilcox is first, Charlton second, and Clinch third. Turner County will be fourth.

Region 3 is the other split Class A region. Unlike Region 5, in 3-A the top team in each subregion hosts the #4 team from the other, and the #2 team hosts the #3 team.

Marion County will be the top seed from Region 4. There's currently a four-way tie for the other three spots.

Region 6 will send Darlington as its top seed. Bremen and Trion meet this week to decide the second and third seeds. The winner of Bowdon and Mt. Paran will be the fourth seed.

Athens Academy will be the top team from 8-A with George Walton Academy second. Wins by Commerce and Prince Avenue will make those schools third and fourth.

The above can be affected by an upset or two this coming Friday.
