Lincoln County, off to its best start in several years, will visit Sparta this Friday night to take on a Hancock Central squad that is much improved over the past few years.
Red Devil faithful are reminded that the new Bulldog field is located behind the new high school on GA 15, north of Sparta. Click on the FFN link beside Hancock Central in the upcoming games block to the right for a map.
The Bulldogs are led by standout running back Deonte Franklin, who rushed for 229 yards and five touchdowns on 17 carries last week against Twiggs County. He also made eight solo tackles on defense in the 66-6 victory, according to the GHSF Daily.
With its 5-0 start, the Devils are ranked as high as #2 in some polls, including the coaches poll.
Since it is about midway the regular season, let's take a spin around Georgia Class A and see what region races are shaping up.
In Region 1, way down in the southwest corner of the Peach State, Seminole County has been the big surprise, appearing in some Top 10s with a 4-1 mark. it, Pelham, and Mitchell County are the top 3 teams. Miller County, often a playoff contender, is having a miserable 0-4 season.
Region 2 may be the toughest region in Class A. Wilcox County and Charlton County are undefeated and headed toward a showdown next Friday. Bacon County has been a surprise, as has defending champion Clinch County's two region losses.
Top-ranked Savannah Christian is undefeated at 4-0 in 3-A East, but so are Bryan County and Calvary Day. Claxton is 3-1 in non-region play. Top 4 ECI is undefeated under a new coach, and looks to win 3-A West. Johnson County, usually a contender, is off to a tough start at 2-3.
Brookstone and Marion County are the top teams in Region 4-A, with 5-0 marks. Taylor County and Greenville will have something to say as well. Hawkinsville is 2-3.
Holy Innocents (4-1) has replaced Wesleyan (now 3-2) as the team to beat in 5 North. Undefeated Landmark Christian and Eagles Landing Christian Academy look to decide 5 South. ELCA's sole loss was to a very good Alabama team.
Bowdon, in what may be its last season in Class A for a while, has reclaimed the top spot in Region 6 with a spotless record in 5 games. Darlington (3-2) has a region loss to Mount Paran Christian (4-1).
Our own Region 7 is still very much up in the air. Aquinas has won 4 straight, including a win over defending region champ Wilkinson County. Washington-Wilkes has improved each week. Warren County will make its presence felt. Our Devils will have their hands full with Hancock Central this week.
Region 7 will match up against Region 8 in the first round of playoffs. With Commerce having a down year with a new coach, the region outlook is very different this season. Prince Avenue Christian is undefeated at 5-0 and owns a win over Athens Academy (3-1). No 8-A team is currently ranked in most polls.
