Devils Move Up to #4 Overall, #2 Public

August 26, 2013

Thanks to Metter upsetting defending state champ ECI, Lincoln County moved from fifth to fourth in the last GHSF Daily Class A poll.

Metter nipped ECI 21-20 after losing to the Bulldogs 42-7 a year earlier. ECI was (and maybe still should be) the favorite to win the 2013 Class A Public football crown. The game was played in Paulson Stadium in Statesboro. ECI dropped out of the poll from its previous #2 position.

Eagles Landing Christian Academy, the defending Private school champ, is ranked #1. ELCA visited Washington County's House of Pain last Friday, but the game was called due to weather in the second quarter with ELCA trailing 6-0.

Prince Avenue Christian, the well-supported private school in Oconee County, is second. In an off-season stunner, Class AAAAAA top 5 team Camden County coach Jeff Herron resigned and took the head job at PAC. Herron had previously led Oconee County to a state title, and has family in the area. PAC beat St. Francis 54-7.

Dooly County, the public school runner-up a year ago after knocking our Devils from the playoffs in the semifinals, is the top-ranked public school at #3 in the list. The Bobcats open their season with Macon County's Bulldogs this Friday.

George Walton Academy, Wilcox County, Wilkinson County, and Athens Academy make up positions 5 to 8. GWA visits First Presbyterian in Macon this week. The big game will be Wilcox at Wilkinson in a battle of teams destined for the playoffs. Athens Academy hosts Landmark Christian.

The Aquinas Irish proved they could win with a new head coach and without star Brendan Douglas as they whipped East Laurens 52-7. The Irish next hit the field September 6 against George Walton Academy.

Savannah Christian is tenth after tying Jenkins 6-6. The Savannah Area All-Stars will face Prince Avenue Christian September 6.

Washington-Wilkes is ranked #10 in Class AA and Thomson is #10 in Class AAA.
