Lincoln County's Red Devils overcame another key injury last Friday in Milledgeville to whip the GMC Bulldogs 35-13 in a Region 7-A matchup.
With lineman Andy Ray Wengrow sidelined, the Devils lost quarterback Lakeith Lockhart to a knee injury on their first offensive play. Ben Turner took the remaining snaps, rushing 11 times for 78 yards and completing seven of 10 pass attempts for 79 yards and a touchdown. Mike McIntire led rushers with 165 yards and three touchdowns on 12 carries.
Georgia Military took the opening kickoff and drove 77 yards on 13 plays, all on the ground. The five-yard touchdown run came with 4:13 left in the first quarter.
Whether intended or not, the succeeding kickoff turned into an onside kick with the Bulldogs recovering. They drove to the LC 15 before the Devil Defense stiffened. GMC's 22-yard field goal attempt was wide left with 11:48 left in the first half.
The Devils finally got the ball, but the injury to Lockhart happened on the first snap. Lincoln County then drove the to GMC 44 on 8 plays before Turner punted into the endzone.
The Bulldogs moved the pigskin well on their next possession, but an offensive interference penalty nullified a huge gain, and led to a short Dog punt.
LCHS took over on the GMC 33, with Turner rushing for 8 yards. McIntire gained 9 and then 7 to setup his own 9-yard touchdown run into the left side of the endzone. James Spratlin booted the extra point to tie the game with 3:39 left before the break.
GMC was able to move the ball again on their next possession but the Devil Defense stopped the effort at the LC 38 just before the half ended.
GMC had outgained the Devils 154-71 in the first half, but the second half would be just the opposite. The Devils took the opening kickoff and overcame two big penalties before Jalen Wade scored on a 20-yard pass from Turner with 9:38 left in the third. The score came on fourth down. Turner started the drive with a 13-yard pass to Jamar Norman, followed by a 24-yard run by McIntire. Turner ran for 8 yards to setup the big pass. Spratlin's kick gave the Devils a 14-7 lead.
After stopping the Bulldogs, the Devils hit on a series of big gainers. McIntire rushed for 23. Turner tossed to Tyquane Ross for 21 yards. Quay Hartfield rushed for 8. Turner had runs of 14 and 17 yards, with Norman rushing for 7 between them. Norman then went down the right side untouched for 15 yards and six points with 2:06 left in the third period.
Hartfield recovered the Devils' onsides kick attempt at the GMC 41. Turner rushed for 8 and then 6. Norman ran for 2. Turner found Ross again, this time for 9 yards before rushing for 9 himself. McIntire went down the left side untouched for 7 yards for the score. The extra point failed, but the Devils led 27-7 with 8 seconds left in the third quarter.
The Devil Defense had another good stand, giving the Devils the ball in good position. Big Red drove to the LC 12 before the Bulldogs grabbed a fumble and rambled 80 yards before the Devils caught the Dog from behind at the 5. GMC scored from the 1 with 7:35 left.
Ahead 27-13, McIntire broke loose for 40 yards down the right side. The senior running back scored from 14 yards out with 6:52 left. Turner passed to Norman for two points to take a 35-13 lead.
Norman intercepted GMC's final pass to end the Bulldogs' last threat.
