Preview: Devils Plan First Trip to Athens Christian

September 10, 2002

They say first impressions are very important. This week, the Devils intend to make a very impressive first visit to Athens Christian, as they take on the Eagles this Friday at 7:30pm.

The Devils and their fans had better get used to US 78, as this week will be the first of three consecutive trips west on 78: Athens Christian, Athens Academy, and Commerce. And the Devil faithful were not smiling when returning from their last three trips up Athens way, with two losses at AA and one at Commerce since 1999.

The Eagles moved from GISA to GHSA two years ago, and played a non-region schedule (7-13 record) while in Region 7-A in 2000 and 2001. This season, the Eagles are competing with a full region schedule in Region 8-A with Commerce, Athens Academy, Jefferson, Social Circle, and others.

Like Lincoln, Athens Christian is also 1-1 this season. The Eagles whipped Whitefield Academy 21-0 in their season opener, but lost to Oglethorpe County 52-28 in a shootout last week.

Their game-plan for 2002 is to have great execution and be quick on offense, and aggressive on defense.

The Athens Christian campus is located at 1270 US Highway 29 North, on the right about two miles past the Athens Tech intersection (near 800 US Hwy 29 North). Based on the picture at the AC website (below), they do not have many visitor seats, so get there early!
