With less than a month to go before the first kickoff in Washington, the footballs are flying and the pads are smacking in Lincoln County. The Red Devils will scrimmage Greenbrier August 7 and Evans August 21, with both events starting at 7:30 those Thursdays at Buddy Bufford Field. Coach Mark Hill reported on the Devils' first week of practice, which began July 21: "We got started on Monday of this week with our annual Red Devil test. We had some good results and the team really seems excited to get started. We are doing our 5th quarter workouts each night this week. This concentrates on agility, weights, and conditioning. We have 52 varsity players that we will carry to camp next week. ... Camp will be at Faith Temple again this year. We will hold all of our practices at the school. Picture day is Friday, Aug. 1. I carried the offensive linemen to Commerce for camp on the 15th, 16th, and 17th. We had a good week and several of our linemen were recognized by the coaches. I worked the camp again this year; it really gets me going and looking forward to the season. Commerce Coach Savage took some digital photos during the camp of our kids. I'll try to get a copy to you and you can use it for the web." The expectations are high for the 2003 Red Devils, but that is nothing new in Lincolnton. But this year is different. Last year's young team almost beat eventual state champ Clinch County. And our sources are very excited about a quarterback that has transferred to LCHS. This QB, who played in a neighboring county last year, received high marks for his outstanding play at the Furman QB camp a few weeks ago, and that is according to a fan with no ties to Lincoln County.
