Athens Christian makes first visit to Buddy Bufford Field

September 08, 2003

The Athens Christian Eagles will fly into Buddy Bufford Field for the first time this Friday evening to take on the red hot Red Devils. The Eagles have yet to scored in 2003, losing to Whitefield Academy 38-0 and Oglethorpe County 12-0. The small private school, located just northeast of Athens, is in its second year participating in the GHSA after many years in the GISA. Here's more on Athens Christian from the Athens Banner-Herald.

The game will be the home-opener for the Red Devils, coming off two big victories over neighbors Washington-Wilkes and McCormick. The wins have propelled the Devils into the #2 ranking in Class A. Top Ten teams Athens Academy and Commerce visit Lincolnton in the coming weeks.

In other games of interest this Friday, #1 Clinch County travels to Folkston to play Class AA stalwart Charlton County in The Swamp. Clinch ran over Johnson County 53-6 last week for its second win, but Charlton County's Indians are going to be on the warpath after losing their season opener 34-6 to AAAAA Camden County. This may be the Panthers toughest game of the 2003 regular season; they won 14-12 in 2002.

Hawkinsville travels to Dodge County for another tough game, while Commerce hosts Banks County. Twiggs County hosts Wilkinson County, and Johnson County hosts East Laurens. Athens Academy travels to Madison County for what appears to be a close game. Metter's Tigers welcome their brethren Tigers from Claxton in another good game.
