Lincoln County begins its 28th consecutive trip to the post-season this Friday by hosting the Jefferson Dragons with kickoff set for 7:30. ** The Red Devils are led offensively by senior QB Cedric Leverett (57/126 for 654 yards), senior RB Sanchez Jones (119 carries for 598 yards), and Courtney Partlow (88 for 503).
Jefferson is led by senior QB Kyle Potts. The 6-1, 180 pounder can throw and run, with over 1,400 combined yards in 2000. Furman rated him as the second best in their quarterback camp this past summer, and he will throw the ball all over the field. Other Jefferson standouts include WR/DB Brantley Gilbert(Jr., 5-10, 140); WR/DB Blake Gooch (Sr., 5-10, 140); WR/DB Ryan Gurley (Sr., 5-11, 175); RB/S Braxton Pittman (Sr., 5-9, 150); OL/LB Jeremy Smith(Sr., 5-10, 160); and RB/LB Courtney Wiley (So., 5-11, 160).
Jefferson (5-5) is coming off a 23-7 loss to AAA Johnson of Gainesville, when the Dragons reportedly held out several of their starters. The Dragons' only other visit to Lincolnton was in 1977, when the Red Devils won 22-7 in the Class B championship game. Rich Lovie of the Athens Banner-Herald points out in our GuestBook that current Jefferson coach Bob Gurley was on the 1977 Dragons. Current Devil assistants Mark Hill and Glen Matthews were members of that Devil team. Matthews later was the head coach at Jefferson. But he was not the first Lincoln County native to coach at the Jackson County school. Who was? Buddy Bufford.
The Devils and the Dragons shared three common opponents in 2001: Social Circle (LC 35-6, J 21-28), Commerce (LC 12-13, J 0-14), and Buford (LC 6-31, J 0-41).
