2003 Devils Most Offensive EVER!!

November 17, 2003

As our Devils use an open date to heal some of their many injuries, let's take a look at what this team has accomplished so far in 2003.

Devil Faithful know that most of our games this year were shortened by allowing the clock to run as early as the second quarter. Considering that, this fact is even more amazing: The 2003 Devils scored more points in the regular season than ANY previous team from Lincolnton. A closer look shows that they actually scored more in their first 9 games this year than any previous Larry Campbell team did in a full 10-game regular season.

That means these Devils averaged scoring over 40 points per game. That includes four games against Top 10 teams.

Senior QB Travis Clark passed for nearly 1,300 yards and 13 TDs, and he only played in the second half in half the games!

And then we have to talk about injuries. None of the local folk remember seeing so many significant injuries on a single team. Players played hurt, and no one ever gives up on this team.

Twice Lincoln found itself behind in the first quarter. Both times the Devils came right back at their opponent and scored on their very next possession. That old Lincoln County swagger is back! Other schools know it, as shown by the difficulty Coach Campbell ran into recently when trying to schedule games for next year.

The 2003 Offensive Line is considered one of the best in Class A, both by statistics and by film study. Devil QBs have the time they need to pass, and the lanes are open when a running play is needed.

Special teams are also adding to the Devils' offensive reputation. Taveras Stokes can return a punt far and fast while the opposition blinks.

And the scary part (for opponents) is the young Devils. Players like CJ Norman and Darrell Norman are speedy and shifty, and have picked up the slack when the starting rushers have missed playing time due to injuries.

How do these Devils stack up against the rest of Class A in offense? Only Pacelli has scored more points (454) and has a bigger winning margin (36.7 to LC's 35.4). Twiggs has scored the third most at 400 , but the Cobras managed only 7 against LCRD. Other teams of interest include Landmark Christian at 377, Trion at 372, and Clinch County at 316.
