Devils Tie State Record with 5th Dome Game

December 12, 2003

Lincoln County made its fifth visit to the Georgia Dome this morning at 9 AM, as our Devils defeated the Trion Bulldogs for the right to play for the 2003 Class A Football Championship next week.

The Devils played in the Dome four straight years, 1997 through 2000, before barely missing the dance "with the fancy shoes" the past two seasons. Lincoln County has now joined Parkview and (later Friday) Washington County as the only teams to play in the Dome semifinals five times.

LCHS is now 3-2 when playing inside the Dome, with all five games very memorable:

1997: The week after their unbelievable 14-12 win over Miller County and Charles Grant that "shocked the world," our Devils fell to eventual state champ Manchester 6-3 in a controversial game. Kenn Barnett booted an 80-yard punt!

1998: In what is still considered one of the best Dome games ever, Lincoln won a shootout with GAC 35-34 by scoring with less than 3:00 to go.

1999: It was supposed to be a showcase for Monte Williams, but our Devils climbed another impossible mountain and upset #1 Commerce 35-21.

2000: Monte got a bit of revenge as the Tigers came back in the fourth quarter to nip our Devils 17-14, and would win the state title the following week.

2003: Our Devils jumped out to a 22-0 halftime lead thanks to the play of Cordarryl Coppin, but Trion scored 24 unanswered points to take a 24-22 lead. The Devil Defense stopped Trion on 4th down at the LC 33, then Travis Clark led the Devils the length of the field in 1:03, with Steven Brown catching the winning TD with 25 seconds left.
