Debate Team Almost Repeats as Class A State Champions

February 09, 2004

"We finished 2nd at state. . . I guess Trion's debate team avenged their loss at the Dome by finishing first. However, they had a much more experienced team, and given our lack of experience this year (we lost our two strong seniors to graduation. . . three of our four kids have debated for two years or less), state runner-up isn't bad (especially given that we actually finished with higher speaker points. . . they had the better record, though).

Speaking of speaker points, second affirmative David Price (senior) was both top affirmative speaker and top speaker overall. In debate, the max speaker points that a debater can receive in a round is 30; David received two 30s and two 29s, finishing five points ahead of the second highest-ranked speaker and six points ahead of the second highest-ranked affirmative. Other team members include first affirmative Laney Turner (junior), first negative Emyle Davis (sophomore), and second negative Shalonda Sherman (junior)."

The LCHS Debate Team won an eighth consecutive region title on Thursday, January 22. In addition to the team's finishing the tournament with a perfect 4-0 record (marking the fourth consecutive year that we haven't dropped a round in the region tourney), LCHS debaters David Price and Emyle Davis were named top affirmative speaker and top negative speaker respectively. (Tradition's note: In the last 4 years, the LCHS Debate Team has won the state title once and finished second the other three years!)
