Lincoln County looks to redeem itself after last Friday's tough loss when our Red Devils travel to Waynesboro to play the Burke County Bears.
Our Devils and Burke County, then coached by Tom Temple, met for 4 classic contests in the early 1990s. Lincoln County came out on top all four times, which we're sure the Bears haven't forgotten.
Class AAA Burke County demolished Class A Jenkins County 48-0 in its season opener. After so-so seasons the past three years, the 2004 Bears are hungry, and see our Devils as they next prey. Burke is much smaller than the monstrous Tigers we saw last week. They have lineman weighing 260 and 270, but most players are between 170 and 200. Linebackers Marcus Washington and Jonathan Prophet are considered college prospects, with Washington already committed to UGA.
The Bears return seven of eight defensive front players and, with the two prospects mentioned above, that defense is considered the team's strength, according to the Georgia High School Football Magazine. Eight starters also return on offense, including leading rusher Isiah Lockhart, QB Daniel Fowler, and receiver Donnie Lambert. Burke moved from Class AAAA during the offseason, and made the playoffs in 2002.
