Late TD Lifts Devils to 7-6 Win over Burke County
August 28, 2004
Perseverance does pay off. After being so-close-yet-so-far to the Burke County Bear goalline, the Lincoln County Red Devils finally got into the endzone with 2:35 left to tie the game. The PAT kick gave the Devils their first victory of 2004, 7-6 in the Bear Den in Waynesboro.
The Devil Defense owned the second half, as the Class AAA Bears managed only 10 yards in the third and fourth quarters. Meanwhile, our Offense controlled the ball, earning about 260 yards during the same half.
Burke County grabbed the lead midway the second quarter after recovering a Devil fumble at the LC 41. Seven plays later the Bears ran in from the 5, but the extra point kick went wide right.
The Devils first possession of the second half ended on downs at the Bear 15. Two great stops by the Devil Defense gave the Devils the ball again at the Bear 39. A good run by CJ Norman gave the Devils a 1st-&-10 at the 11, but the drive ended at the 5. Another good defensive series put LC back in action at their 38. Darrell Norman had a good series of productive runs before QB Cord Coppin connected with Steven Brown for a 19-yard gain to the Burke 20. CJ Norman rushed for 7 and Gavin Williams gained 4 for 1st-&-goal at the 9. Three plays lost two yards, forcing a 4th-&-goal at the 11. Coppin found Brown open on the goalline for the TD. Chase McGill's kick gave the Devils the much-needed one-point winning margin.
