Week 3 State Preview: Big Games Spice Schedule

September 01, 2004

Lincoln County may be taking this Friday off, but there are many good games throughout the Peach State to keep an eye on this Friday. Coaches and fans must also keep watch for Hurricane Frances, as it could affect some games.

Clinch County's new head coach will get his first big test as his #2-ranked Panthers host the always tough Charlton County Indians, #3 in Class AA. This battle in the Swamp should be a classic.

The #2 team in AA also faces a Class A stalwart, Miller County. The Pirates, #6 in A, host Early County. We also take note that the #1 team in AA (if not all classes), Buford, tied Parkview's 46-game-win-streak record last week and should break it against Union County in Blairsville this week.

Hawkinsville will have its first breather of a weekend, as the #1 Red Devils explode through Treutlen. Twiggs County dropped only 1 spot after their 21-7 loss to H'ville; the Cobras squirm to Dooly County this week in another 4-A battle.

Commerce hopes to rebound from last week's loss when the Tigers host undefeated Morgan County. The Bulldogs shocked Commerce last year 35-7, but I wouldn't count on that rare occurrence happening two years in a row!

Bremen has worked itself up to the #5 spot in the AJC poll. The Blue Devils season starts getting tougher this week, and they finish the season with Bowdon and Trion back-to-back.

Pacelli caught some heat on the Vent with their 81-0 win last Friday. The Vikings are not expected to have much competition until October, when they have to play some Red Devils.

Glascock County has a good chance at a win this week when they host Long County. Stewart-Quitman and Central-Talbotton have been outscored a collective 235-18 in their four games, but they should have a pretty good game against each other this week.

Washington-Wilkes will be looking for its first victory of 2004 when the Tigers travel to Hartwell. Their work will be cut out for them against the 2-0 Hart County Bulldogs.

Aquinas, still riding high after whipping Richmond Academy last week, rides to Athens this Friday to play Athens Christian. The Irish have a great chance to go 2-0 on the young season, and it is very possible they will be 5-0 when they visit Lincolnton October 1. They could even be favored to win that game --- naahhhh, let's not go THAT far!
