Coppin-Barden Connection & Defense Whip Wolfpack 22-7

September 11, 2004

The Red Devil Defense smothered Greenbrier's offense and Cord Coppin connected with Brandon Barden to overcome a 7-0 halftime deficit to lead Lincoln County to a 22-7 home victory over the Class AAAA school.

Coppin completed 5 pass attempts for 131 yards. Four of those were to sophomore tight-end Barden for 116 yards, a touchdown, and a two-point PAT. The other pass went to Shawntavious Jennings in the end-zone for the second LC touchdown.

Two turnovers hampered the Devils in the first half. Three times Lincoln went for it on fourth down and failed, the last of which allowed Greenbrier to start a drive at the LC 44.

The Devil Defense kept the quick Wolfpack offense in check for most of the first half. Greenbrier put in a fresh set of backs in the second quarter, which made two good runs of 20 and 10 yards to setup the Wolfpack's only score. Greenbrier scored from the 2 on a run with 20 seconds left in the half.

Greenbrier took the second half kickoff and moved into Devil territory before being forced to punt the the Devil Defense. Facing a 3rd-&-10 at their 20, Coppin found a wide open Barden behind the Greenbrier defenders. Barden grabbed the pass in mid-stride and was caught at the G 18, 62 yards later. Steven Brown gained 11 on an end-around run for first-&-goal at the 4. Two plays lost a yard before Coppin found the lanky Barden wide open in the endzone for the TD with 4:28 left in the third. A five-yard substitution penalty pushed the PAT attempt back five yards, but that just gave the Devils more room for their fake kick, with hold Coppin again finding Barden in the endzone. The Devils now led 8-7.

An exchange of punts put Greenbrier at their 33. Two plays lost 3 yards, with Brandon Reed breaking up a third down pass attempt. A bad punt gave LC the ball at the G 47. On third down, Barden showed his talent as he laid out to catch a 26-yard pass from Coppin. One play later Coppin, making one of his best plays of the young season, found Jennings uncovered in the endzone for the TD. Chase McGill's kick put the Devils ahead 15-7 with 7:21 left int he game.

With a minute to go and the game still within Greenbrier's reach, teh Wolfpack turned the ball over on downs at their 20. Big Red tried to run out the clock with runs up the middle, while the Wolfpack called time-outs to get another chance. Coppin faked the run up the middle, keeping the ball on a bootleg left and went untouched into the endzone on a 16-yard TD run with 34 ticks left. McGill provided the final margin at 22-7.
