As expected, Our Lady of Mercy's visit to Lincolnton ended under the GHSA mercy rule.
The first play of the game set the tone, unfortunately for OLM. The Bobcats attempted an onside kick to open the game, but the ball went only 4 yards, not the required 10. Lincoln County took over at the OLM 43, and 3 plays later Gavin Williams scooted in from 27-yards out fro all the points the Devils would need to reach the second round of playoffs. Gavin ended the night with five carries for 82 yards and 2 TDs.
Shawtavious Jennings scored on a 7-yard run midway the first quarter, and Logan Rhodes recovered a blocked punt in the endzone for the Devils 3rd score on this chilly evening.
Gavin scored again, this time on a 1-yard run, midway the second quarter. Then the Norman show started. First it was Darrell Norman busting loose on a 56-yard TD scamper. C J Norman followed that with a 40-yard run into the endzone as the second quarter drew to a close. With Devil subs playing the second half, Rontae Norman ran in from 12 yards out. Then Richardo Norman intercepted an OLM pass and returned it 67 ayrds for the final TD of the night.
The Devils will now host old enemy Commerce in the second round next Friday.
The Devils are approaching their 100th playoff win; they are currently 98-23, including 63-11 at home during The Campbell Years.
