Lincoln County's second biggest rival will visit Buddy Bufford Field this Friday to decide who will advance to the third round of the 2004 Class A playoffs.
This Friday is a rematch of the September 18 game in Commerce when the Devils won 18-13. That game left fans of both schools unsatisfied, which just adds to the hype around this week. The two coaching staffs know each other exceedlingly well, with this week the 7th meeting in just over 4 years.
Commerce has had a rough season in Tiger terms. They are 7-4, with the most meaningful loss to Athens Academy 22-7 two weeks ago for the Region 8-A title. Commerce held on to defeat Trion 13-7 last Friday behind the play of a freshman quarterback that was forced into action when the regular QB had shoulder surgery. Some other Tigers have been banged up, but we are sure they will all play and play hard this Friday.
Friday night's clash in Lincolnton features two of the all-time top 10 schools in Georgia. In all-time winning percentage, Lincoln is 3rd and Commerce 10th. Commerce is currently 15th in Georgia all-time in wins with a 493-233-19 record. Our Devils are 611-221-23 and fourth overall. Since 2000, Commerce is 48-16, one loss better than our Devils' record of 48-17 during that same period.
The Devils are approaching their 100th playoff win; they are currently 98-23, including 63-11 at home during The Campbell Years.
