Something Special: The Rhodes Family

November 09, 2004

After last week's game, we received this note from a member of the Rhodes family. This is another example of why Lincolnton, Lincoln County, and Red Devil football are special:

Good Afternoon "Mr. Tradition",

I wanted to drop you a line to tell you of a 'by-line' on one of the Red Devils. Last Wednesday, November 3rd, Logan Rhodes lost his grandfather, Claude Rhodes, to a sudden and quite unexpected heart attack. To say the least, our entire family was devastated by the news. Claude was a fine man with the biggest heart I have ever known. He absolutely loved children and he cherished his grandsons. He was kind and generous and loved the outdoors. He was a Lincoln County native and had spent his entire life in these parts. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

While Claude's body may not be with us anymore, his spirit certainly appears to be…

At Beggs Funeral Home Thursday evening, I hugged Logan and told him that I knew what he was going to do Friday night. I told him he was going to score his first touchdown. I didn't know if it would be by a fumble recovery or an interception or what, but I just KNEW he was going to put six points on the board. On Friday evening, I got to witness my premonition. Logan recovered a blocked punt attempt in the end zone and was credited with a touchdown. While I believe Logan should have full credit for the score, I also know that his Grandpa had the assist. It was, in my humble opinion, a sign that Claude was with his family and watching over us all.

Thank you for your time and please keep Logan and the rest of his family in your prayers.

Chris Rhodes
