Red Devil Band Earns High Marks At Various Festivals

December 07, 2004

(From The Lincoln Journal) The Lincoln County Red Devil Pride Marching Band turned in a stellar performance at the Lake Hartwell Marching Festival held recently at Hart County High School.

The band, which is under the direction of Jasper Dukes, received the following ratings: Drum Majors, Superior; Majorettes, Superior; Color Guard, Excellent; and Percussion, Excellent. The band captured and overall rating of Superior for its performance at the festival.

The band also took part in the Warrior Pride Classic (Marching Competition) at West Oak High School in Westminster, South Carolina. The groups rating at this event were: Drum Majors, Superior; Majorette, Superior; Color Guard, Excellent; and Percussion, Excellent. The Band earned an overall rating of Excellent and took 4th in Class II. Classes are determined by the number of musicians in each band.

“To some people, it may look as if we did better in the first festival (Hartwell) than in the second, but the events are totally different," according to Director Dukes. “The judging criteria are more stringent for a competition than they are for a festival. Also, bands are ranked in classification at competitions which is not the case at festivals."

He went on to say that the Warrior Pride Classic was the first competition the band has participated in since he took over as director in 2002. "I am extremely proud of the students and their efforts. This lets me know what we need to work toward so that our band can become as competitive as the bands at many of the surrounding schools."

In other news, Dukes reported that several band members took part in the District 10 GMEA (Georgia Music Educators Association) Solo and Ensemble Festival held at Augusta State University. "We were fortunate enough to receive a total of 15 Superior ratings, 5 Excellent ratings, and 1 Good rating. These kids worked hard and it paid off."

To participate in the festival, students are required to prepare a solo or duet appropriate for their grade level. They are then judged on the following criteria: Suitability of Music, Tone, Intonation, Technique, Balance, Interpretation, Musical Effect, Stage Presence, Appearance, and so forth.

"This is the 2nd year we have taken part in this event, and each year, our students get better," said Dukes.

The LCMS/LCHS musicians attending the GMEA solo and Ensemble festival were:

Jennifer Herrick, Coty Norman, Lizzy McKinney, Janay Dukes, Sarah Fonseca, Scott Sutherland, Erik Smith, Dontae Zellars, Jazmon Dukes, Brittney Calhoun, Jeree Dukes, Donnell Harris, Lee O’ Neil, T.J. Carani, Nicole Beard, Alisha Brown, Shayman Hearst, Ashia Crew, Ceseley Henderson, Jeffery Brown, Karl Perrin, and Derion Reid.
