Junior Devils Suffer First Loss, Host Harlem Thursday at 5:30

September 15, 2005

Lincoln County's Junior Varsity Red Devils saw their 3-game win streak end last Thursday at the hands of the Thomson Bulldogs, 28-7, in Lincolnton.

Thomson quickly took the lead when their Bullpups returned the opening kickoff 80 yards, with the PAT kick resulting in a 7-0 lead before the first play from scrimmage.

The Devil office tried to answer by driving the ball down the field on their next possession. A fumble on fourth down near midfield turned disastrous when Thomson picked up the ball and rumbled 50 yards for their second TD.

Early in the second quarter, the young Devils scored on a pass play from QB Alex Ellis to TE Josh Hollimon. Vance Tarver added the PAT to close the Thomson lead to 14-7.

The rest of the second quarter saw Thomson's offense and the Junior Devil's defense battle it out for field position. Thomson's misdirection offense scored one more time before half with a long running play that got outside of the Red Devil defense and with the PAT the halftime score was Thomson 21, LC 7.

The second half saw the Red Devils fight back a little harder than the first half but with no points to show for their effort. The Red Devil offense drove down the field with several good runs by RB Carlos Hearst and several catches by Wilkes Goolsby. Turnovers prevented the good gains from resulting in points for the young Devils.

Thomson scored one more TD late in the 3rd quarter on a long pass that made the score THS 28 and LC 7

The 4th quarter saw the Red Devils defense continue to play hard and the offense continue to make positive plays, but in the end, the turnovers proved to be too much to overcome.

Afterwards, Coach Kevin Blizzard commented, "Our team never quit while we were down. …The defense played really hard. …. .I feel that if we could have limited our mistakes on offense, we had a chance to win."

(Our thanks to Coach Kevin Blizzard for the game recap.)
