Time to forget about Commerce and take aim on its Region 8-A companion Athens Academy as the Spartans visit Buddy Bufford Field this Friday at 7:30.
Our Red Devils clearly played their most complete game of the year last Friday when they trounced Commerce 28-5. The elation of ending a four-game losing streak must now be put aside as the Spartans from Athens Academy invade Buddy Bufford field this week in search of their third straight win after a slow start.
The Spartans are coming off an 11-2 season, losing only to our Red Devils and Hawkinsville (third round of playoffs). The eleven wins was a school record. Athens Academy returns 13 starters, six on offense and seven on defense with a group group of skill players returning on both sides of the ball. The Spartans lost their starting QB and leading rusher to graduation. Derek Chuboff, a 260-pound center, returns as a college prospect that will anchor their offensive line. Gordon Pendleton and Christian Peirce are standouts at linebacker. Defensive back Brett Satterfield is a Division I prospect who had 8 interceptions in 2004, according to the 2005 Georgia High School Football Magazine.
AA started the season by being stunned 27-6 by Mill Creek, a new AAAAA high school playing only their second year of football. A 21-all tie with Wesleyan spurred the Spartans to a 35-7 win over Apalachee and a 27-7 victory over Walker. Lincoln County is the Spartan's first Class A opponent of 2005.
