Class A Playoff Picture Comes Into Focus

October 24, 2005

It's been a topsy-turvy year in Class A, but at least the 2005 playoff picture is finally coming into focus.

For Lincoln County fans, the Devils will host the #4 team from Region 8-A, which looks to be the Jefferson Dragons (currently 5-4 and playing 8-A champ Social Circle this week).

Washington-Wilkes travels to Warrenton this Friday to decide the #2 and #3 spots in 7-A. The winner will host the loser of this week's Athens Academy at Commerce game, while the W-W-vs-WC loser travels north to play the winner of AA-vs-Commerce. The winner of Hancock Central at Aquinas will travel to Social Circle in the first round.

The last two undefeated Class A teams went down last Friday. In another Devils-vs-Devils battle, Bowdon defeated arch-rival Bremen 17-13. Barring an upset of Bowdon by Gordon Lee, the Region 6-A top 4 seeds will be Bowdon, Bremen, Gordon Lee, and Temple, with Trion missing the playoffs for the first time in a few years. Bowdon's sole loss was to Class AAA Carrollton.

Portal saw its Cinderella season take a major hit as the Panthers lost to McIntosh County Academy 22-13. The MCA Bucs (7-1-1) will win Region 3-A with Portal likely finishing second. Calvary Day (formerly Calvary Baptist) will be third, and Savannah Country Day fourth (unless it upsets Portal this week).

Turner County wins Region 1, as defending Co-Champion Clinch County finishes second in the region. Seminole County will be third, with Lanier County fourth. Miller County, often a contender for the state title, will miss the playoffs for the first time in many years and could finish 3-7 as they face Turner this week.

Randolph-Clay and Terrell County meet this week in Cuthbert to decide the top two spots in Region 2-A. Both teams would be undefeated except for losses to Seminole County, the #3 team from 1-A. Brookstone and Pacelli meet this week to finalize the third and fourth seeds in Region 2.

Region 4 has been one of the wilder regions this season. Johnson County is the clear leader and has cinched the top spot. Defending Co-Champ Hawkinsville, overcoming two early season losses when it was hit hard by injuries, will finish second. Dooly County should finish third with Twiggs County fourth.

Landmark Christian travels to Eagles Landing Christian in a game to decide the top 2 slots in Region 5. Mt. Zion should finish third with Whitefield Academy fourth.
