The Red Devil baseball team is off to a 5-7 start in the 2006 season. Inconsistent hitting has been the biggest problem for the Devils so far during the season. The Devils have scored less than six runs in six of the twelve games.
Brandon Barden and Tyler Beale have been the only consistent hitters throughout the season but lately Casey Norman, Kiece Crite, and Austin Goldman have shown signs of coming out of their slumps. Alex Bradford has been getting on base consistently and has been dangerous on the bases. Designated hitter Daniel Morris has missed several games with a back injury but is expected back soon.
Leading the pitchers have been Austin Reed, Beale, Barden and Dalton Tankersley. The defense has made some critical mistakes but overall has played pretty good. Josh Hollimon is showing constant improvement behind the plate while Trey Bailey, Tristan Wynn and Crafton Reed have done a good job of filling in due to injuries and to replace the position vacated by the pitcher.
The Devils began Region 7-A play last Friday with a 5-1 victory over GMC. Austin Reed pretty much shut down the Bulldogs with a 3-hitter. LCHS took the lead in the fourth on consecutive singles by Beale and Barden. Crite followed with a run scoring double and he was followed by Hollimonís two-run homer to give the Devils a 4-1 lead. In the sixth Barden singled, stole second and third and then scored on a throwing error by the GMC catcher.
Coach Billy Beale said that "we played our best game of the season in the first region game. It was a big win for us not only for the region victory but was a huge boost to our confidence. The bottom of the order picked us up."
