Week 9: Another Wild Night in Class A

October 28, 2006

Bowdon, Hawkinsville, and Commerce all lost key region contests Friday night in another wild edition of Georgia Class A Football.

Bowdon's 14-7 loss at home to Gordon Lee is probably the most unexpected. The team from Chickamuaga had not lost to the Western Red Devils since 1983, when Bowdon coach Dwight Hochstetler was still at Greenville High. Bremen defeated Trion 10-0 in the other Region 6-A game. Bremen travels to play at Gordon Lee next Friday in a game that may decide the region title. This region is a long way from being decide. A win over Twiggs County next Friday in Lincolnton earns our Devils a home playoff game against the #4 team from Region 6-A.

Twiggs County whipped Monticello 31-7 Friday night. Hancock Central nipped Wilkinson County 8-7 in a key game between 7-A playoff contenders. Aquinas edged GMC 22-21 in the other 7-A game.

Hawkinsville lost to Wilcox County 21-20 in overtime for its second consecutive region loss. Hawkinsville will make the region playoff, and should make the state playoffs as a #2 or #3 seed.

Athens Academy kicked a field goal to overtake Commerce 10-9 in Region 8-A. The Spartans could be headed into the playoffs undefeated, but still have tough games against Jefferson and Social Circle remaining.

ECI didn't play Friday, but has a big battle in Portal next Friday that will decide Region 3-A.
