Trion Makes First Trip to The Bud

November 14, 2006

Trion's Bulldogs will make their first trip to Buddy Bufford Field this Friday in the opening round of the 2006 GHSA playoffs. KICKOFF IS 7:00!

Trion returns to the playoffs this year after missing last season for the first time since 1990. Tom Bryant replaced Mark Loudermilk as the Bulldogs' head coach, and welcomed back seven starters on offense and defense, according to the Georgia High School Football Magazine. The starting backfield and 3 of 5 linemen returned on offense, and the starting secondary returned on defense.

From the Walker County Messenger in its preseason special, "Trion has 471 all-time wins — tied for 21st on Georgia’s all-time list — 12 region championships and a pair of state titles. Tom Bryant, a former head coach at Tusculum College is the new head coach at Trion. Senior Jordan Reynolds will be the starter under center while the running back situation is solid as usual with seniors Bobby Dover, Mark Chapman and Allen Ellenburg. Senior Skylar Hughes returns at receiver. The line will also be a strength with four returning starters, including seniors Adam Everett and Nic Parris. Seniors Russ Maddux, D.J. Reed and Ryan Murphy are standouts on the defensive line. Chapman and Chaz Thomas will offer senior leadership at linebacker while senior Justin Warnock is a mainstay in the secondary. Junior Cain Smith is a rising star."

The Bulldogs have had a 4-6 season highlighted by good wins and close losses. Their record becomes misleading when their schedule is looked at closely. They defeated 3 Class AA schools, and lost by 4 to a AAA team. Losses include by 7 or less to Class A playoff teams Commerce, Jefferson, and Bowdon.

Trion has faced our Devils twice, with both games classics in Devil lore. Trion won 7-0 at their place in the 1974 state title game on a long pass with 1:15 left. The Devils edged the Bulldogs 28-24 three years ago in one of the most exciting Dome games ever; the Devils took a 22-0 lead only to trail 24-22 late in the fourth before winning 28-24. We'll have more on these games soon.
