Hawkinsville held on to upset ECI 10-6 as surprises were scattered around Class A in 2006's first round.
ECI was undefeated and ranked #1 or #2 in polls. Hawkinsville took a 7-0 halftime lead, then added a field goal before withstanding a late Bulldog charge that cut the final margin to 10-6. Hawkinsville will now travel to the far southwest corner of the Peach State to play Seminole County. The Indians destroyed Chattahoochee County 68-8 Friday night. The winner of Seminole and Hawkinsville will play the winner of ELCA at Lincoln County.
Eagles Landing Christian Academy from McDonough will visit Lincolnton next Friday in the second round. ELCA pounded Jefferson 41-20 Friday. The Chargers are 10-1, losing only to Landmark Christian 28-14. In their only common opponent with our Devils, the Chargers defeated GMC 31-8. ELCA defeated 4-A champ Brookstone 20-14 and 6-A champ Bremen 24-21. The Chargers played in the private school league prior to 2005.
Other 7-A teams represented themselves well Friday night. Hancock Central travelled to Chickamauga and beat Gordon Lee 36-15. Hancock's task is much tougher next week as it faces undefeated Athens Academy, a 41-0 winner over Fellowship Christian. Wilkinson County gave Bremen all the Blue Devils wanted and more before falling 27-19. Bremen hosts Commerce next week after Commerce stung Whitefield Academy 40-14.
