Eagle's Landing Christian Academy has won two Class A state championships this year. Their Chargers are looking to do the same in football by upsetting the defending state champs this Friday in Lincolnton.
ELCA won the softball title two weeks ago, and the baseball title last spring. The Chargers moved from GISA to GHSA two years ago. Coach Nick Westbrook took over the football program at that time, and produced immediate results by making the playoffs the last two seasons. Westbrook is now 25-8 at the McDonough school.
ELCA is 10-1, with the sole loss coming to Landmark Christian 28-14 in a game that decided the 5-A crown. Only 29 were listed on the Charger roster when the season started, but don't let that fool you. The Chargers beat GMC 31-8, and defeated 4-A champ Brookstone and 6-A champ Bremen.
The Chargers can run and throw. Last week against Jefferson, Wes Carter passed 47 yards to Brian Most for a TD, and ran in from the 2 for another. Russ Cooper rushed for 1 score and returned a blocked punt to start the scoring. ELCA led 27-0 at the half, while holding Jefferson to 39 yards of offense.
